Communication and Dramatic Arts Accolades

Spring 2007:  M.A. student Laura Bantle was selected as this year's recipient of the International Communication Association's Instructional Development Division Graduate Student Teaching Award.

Fall 2007:  The Communication Association became an official student club of the National Communication Association.

Fall 2007:  A list of the paper/panel presentations that COM faculty presented at the National Communication Association Conference in Chicago, IL:

  • Hinck, E., Hinck, S. S., & Withers, L. A.  (2007, November). Service-learning in prison facilities:  Contact and interaction as sources of changes in stereotypes. Paper accepted for presentation at the annual meeting of the National Communication Association, Chicago, IL.
  • Hinck, E., Hinck, S. S., & Withers, L. A.  (2007, November).  Mapping the intersecting tensions of faith, intellect, and ethics in prison work:  Reflecting on efforts to actualize worldviews of justice.  Panel proposal accepted for presentation at the annual meeting of the National Communication Association, Chicago, IL.

Awards:

  • Ed Hinck, Shelly Hinck, and Lesley Withers' competitive paper, titled "Service-learning in Prison Facilities: Contact and Interaction as Sources of Changes In Stereotypes," has been selected as a Top Paper by the National Communication Association's Experiential Learning in Communication Division.  The paper will be presented at NCA's annual meeting in Chicago on November 17, 2007.
  • In October 2007, COM Professor Shelly Hinck was selected as the faculty recipient of the "Volunteers are Central" award, and a COM student, Rebecca Thornton, was selected as the student recipient of the award.  "Volunteers are Central" is a volunteer recognition program designed to highlight CMU students, faculty, and staff engaging in service to our community.
  • COM undergraduate student and Communication Association member Rebecca Mercado Thornton has been selected by the National Communication Association (NCA) as the recipient of the NCA Student Club Top Member Paper Award.
  • Darrel Farmer's paper received top honors for the 2007 Pi Kappa Delta (PKD)
    Undergraduate Honors session. His paper will be published in an upcoming issue of The Forensic, PKD's refereed journal for forensics scholarship, appearing September/October of 2008. His paper conducts an analysis of arguments presented by ex-military officers evaluating the situation in Iraq at the Democratic Policy Committee meeting last year.
