Cyrano
Adapted by Jo Roets
English Translation by Audrey Van Tuyckom
based on the play Cyrano de Bergrac by Edmond Rostand

The play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmund Rostand opened in Paris at the Porte Saint-Martin Theatre December 28, 1897.  Little did Rostand know at the time that this play would become his signature work introducing one of the greatest roles for the stage—Cyrano de Bergerac—the man with the big nose and panache!   This role, which was written for the great French actor Benoit Constant Coquelin, has been played by some of the greatest actors of our time including Ralph Richardson, José Ferrer, Christopher Plumber, Derek Jacobi and most recently, Kevin Kline.
However, this play, Cyrano, is an adaptation of Rostand’s, by Belgium playwright, Jo Roets and unlike Rostand’s play, which has over 75 actors, Cyrano has three!  For example, Scott Freeman plays Christian de Neuvillette who falls in love with the beautiful Roxane, but he also will be playing six other roles.  Thus, you must bring your imagination to the theatre as these three actors create the world of Cyrano before your eyes!  The heart of the story is there as it is a tale of an accomplished man, Cyrano, who feels his outward ugliness deprives him of the love of a beautiful woman, Roxane, and though he has richness of spirit and deep devotion and undying loyalty to her he feels that she will always be out of his reach because of his appearance.  His fear of rejection is so great that it propels him into an unlikely collaboration.
